Innovation Competition

Competition: Powering up Tampere business by research and the commercialisation of the results

The Tampere3 universities – Tampere University of Applied Sciences, Tampere University of Technology, and University of Tampere - are organising a competition funded by the City of Tampere. The competition is aimed at financing the research projects with the greatest added value for commercial and industrial activities in Tampere. The competition will distribute €300,000 – €400,000 to three (3) different projects, amounting to max. one million euros (€1 million).

Principles of the competition

  • The project proposal may feature research, applied research, product development, or the devel-opment and release of a new concept or service, etc.
  • Ideas, concepts and research themes are sought on a wide range and multidisciplinary basis.

  • Projects are expected to have maximal regenerative impact for commercial and industrial activities in Tampere.
    • For example, concepts or solutions formed during the project can be piloted by leveraging Tampere infrastructure or business life.
  • Corporate (international) co-operation during the project is considered an advantage.

  • There are no limitations for the formation of the competition team.
    • The presenter may be an existing team or a newly established team of researchers, students and teachers.
    • The team must have significant representation from at least two of the Tampere3 universities.
  • The competition organisers reserve the right not to distribute part of the reserved funding if sufficiently meritorious application proposals are not submitted before the deadline.

Competition schedule

  • The competition has two phases: 1) Application phase, 2) Screening and interview phase

  • The competition will begin on 18 May 2016 and will end on 24 August 2016 at 11:59 pm.

  • The applications will be screened during August-September 2016.
  • Based on the screening, some of the applicants will be invited to present their project in more detail to a selection panel of representatives of the three universities and the City of Tampere. Selection panel will make a proposal on the projects to be awarded.
  • The final decision on the projects that will be awarded will be made by a jury selected by the City of Tampere comprising representatives from business life, research and funders of research and entrepreneurial activities.

  • The result of the competition will be published on 30 September 2016.
  • The operations of the winning projects may start as soon as the results are published, but no later than 1st September 2016.
  • The projects are expected to finish no later than 30th June 2018.

Assessment criteria

Applications will be assessed as a whole. Special attention will be paid to following criteria:

  • Innovation and novelty value
  • Credibility of the project and team
  • Scientific level in research projects
  • Commercial potential and market access schedule of the project
  • International applicability of the results of the project
  • Potential for creating new business and employment effects in Tampere


  • Applications may be in Finnish or English.
  • Applications must be submitted using an online form - English form, Finnish form.
  • It is not possible to submit any attachments with the application.
